Dark Sky SpotA field guide to dark skies

Dark sky places in Utah

Utah has 25 certified dark-sky places out of 27, the densest set on this site, and it reads like a tour of the red rock country. Canyonlands National Park and Capitol Reef National Park both record Bortle 1 skies, and Goblin Valley, Goosenecks, Fremont Indian and the towns of Bluff, Torrey and Castle Valley record Bortle 1 too. Arches National Park puts the Milky Way above Delicate Arch at Bortle 2, Bryce Canyon National Park counts more than 7,500 stars on a moonless night over the hoodoos, and Zion National Park hangs the Milky Way between the walls of Zion Canyon.Spring and autumn give the most comfortable desert nights, and the Milky Way is best from April to September, around the new moon. The City of Moab is the base for the parks around it, and the towns of Springdale, Helper and Torrey are certified places in their own right. If you want one state for a dark-sky trip, Utah is the one with the most to choose from.
